Lifting Others

Helping Hand

“You cannot lift another soul until you are standing on higher ground than he is.  You cannot light a fire in another soul unless it is burning in your own soul.” -Harold B. Lee

As followers of Jesus Christ, we strive to emulate Him.  In his Sermon on the Mount, he taught…

“Ye are the light of the world.  A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” -Matthew 5:14, 16

As important as it is for us to share the message of the gospel with others, we must first make sure that we are living our lives so that we can do so correctly.  How can we expect others to follow the very One we strive to be like if they can not see Him in us? A Book of Mormon prophet asked the penetrating question…

“…Have ye received His image in your countenances?” -Alma 5:14 (Book of Mormon)

We cannot expect others to see the light of the Savior within us if we are not living the way he exemplified.

We can lift others by loving and serving them.  So many people today are only focused on themselves, but if we are always looking for opportunities to help others, everything in our own lives will fall into place.  The best place to start serving is within the walls of your own home.  Few things can strengthen a family more than loving and serving each other.

Have you ever noticed someone on the side of the road that needed help, but kept on driving?  We all have I’m sure.  I’ve experienced this more than once.  I remember experiencing feelings of regret.  It was as if God had put me in that situation to help, and offered me the opportunity, but I declined.  I hope that God will continue to give me opportunities to help others as I learn to recognize and accept them.

When we serve others, we lift them up.  We lift their spirits.  We bring happiness to their lives.

I believe all of us are divinely connected to each other.  We are children of a Heavenly Father.  We are brothers and sisters.  How much better of a place would this world be if we all believed that, and acted on that belief?
